Black and white illustrated map of the world for Life On The Road
One of the most special projects I worked on in the last few years is this illustrated map I created for Life on the Road, a stunning 256-page book by Akela World and gestalten. This collaboration means a lot to me, not only because of the inspiring story it tells but also because it brought back memories of my own year and a half traveling around Australia and New Zealand in a 4WD and a van, an experience that changed my life.
This map is a tribute to vintage exploration maps, capturing the incredible 7-year journey of Maria, Leander, and their son Lennox in their trusted 1977 MB 911 truck. Their adventure spanned 5 continents and 36 countries, and the black and white map highlights their route around the world, with only the recognizable blue tint of their truck cabin emphasizing the path they traveled.
The wildlife illustrations featured on the map celebrate the family’s deep connection to nature and the oceans. Each continent they visited is represented by unique animals: a camel, a bison, a black bear, orcas, an orangutan, a Mongolian wild horse, a kangaroo, and a humpback whale. Alongside these, the truck that carried them through this epic journey is also depicted, showcasing its pivotal role in their story.
Adapting my visual style to this project was an exciting challenge, and I’m thrilled with how it complements the breathtaking photographs from their travels. This map was a joy to create and is a true celebration of exploration, adventure, and connection to the natural world.
